MORKIES are the adorable result of breeding a purebred Yorkshire Terrier with a purebred Maltese. The result is a designer dog you just might like. But what are the pros and cons of the Morkie or Morky?
Designer dogs or hybrid dogs are very popular -- in fact they're often advertised as designer dogs.
Breeders or hobbyists will breed two purebreds for a crossbred result. Those results -- the pups -- are almost always different since it takes many, many generations to develop a true breed.
So when dog breeds are designed, how do you know you're getting the best of both?? Is it possible to get the WORST of both breeds? Well that's the problem... but then again you might find the risk is worth it!

Let's face it -- names like 'Rex' or 'Buddy' or 'Lucky' ain't gonna cut it as a Yorkie name. But how to find a name that reflects your feisty little friend's personality, and your own?
Yorkshire Terriers - now the 3rd most popular registered breed in America - deserve a special name and there are lots of ways to find one.
Here are just a few: go with the flow and pick one of the most popular names today; name your pooch after a celebrity or a celebrity's dog, or.... use geography to help you. Dakota? Paris? Sky? Play with flower names (Daisy?), months (April?).... You could go with an old-fashioned name, or try a super modern tag. Use his looks or character for inspiration, or go with a name that's absolutely opposite like Joan River's Yorkie "Spike." This lens will help you find the perfect yorkie terrier puppy names!
MORKIES are the result of breeding a purebred Yorkshire Terrier with a purebred Maltese.
The result is a very cute dog as you'll see below. But if you're considering getting one, or any of the other "designer dog" combinations, please be very careful where you get your dog.
Many of these new "designer dogs" come from puppy mills or backyard breeders. You don't even want to know what goes on at these places. They're sold to customers direct or sold through pet stores.
Instead, try one of the many pet rescue organizations around. If you're patient you'll find your Yorkie-Maltese mix.
1. Be sure you're not buying from a puppy mill.
2. Find out more about your pup's family tree.
3. Check out the two breeds that make a Morkie - the Yorkie and the Maltese - and be sure you can live with their flaws as well as their wonderful points.
When you get a puppy, or even an older dog - you know that house training your dog is job one (excuse the pun) ... It's always a challenge - but if you've heard toy dogs are even harder to train, you're right!
Why is that? Small dog breeds can be much more challenging to train because of their intelligence, head-strong nature and mischievous personality. Small dog breeds often view discipline and training as games and will use the opportunity to test the owner's patience. It's not unusual for a toy dog breed to quickly understand the command training being taught but still clown around to lighten the mood.
Experts have all sorts of theories, or even deny that small dogs are more difficult to house train, but read on and see if you agree...
Because with constant supervision at the beginning (or better yet a crate) PLUS teaching the puppy to go to the door itself -- you'll find it IS possible to potty train toy dogs!
(And you can click here for specific dog training tips for yorkies .)
Two of today's most popular toy dog breeds -- the Yorshire Terrier and the Maltese -- are being cross bred to create an adorable toy dog: the Morkie (Morky) or Yorktese.
What's a Morkie all about?
Both Maltese and Yorkies have their pros and cons, so the Morkie is a gamble that the best of both will shine through in the tiny toy Morkie. To find out if one is right for you, take a close look at the two breeds that are combined to come up with a Morkie puppy, and then you can decide if designer dog breeds are what you want. Read more here about how maltese and yorkies bred together result in beautiful morkie puppies

Yorkshire Terriers make one of the best animal companions you could ask for. Although small, these dogs are feisty and think they're much, much larger than they are. They rank fairly high on the intelligence scale for dogs, ranked at #21 for overall smarts, out of approximately 320 breeds.
Yorkshire Terriers, affectionately known as "Yorkies," offer big personalities in a small package. Though members of the Toy Group, they are terriers by nature and are brave, determined, investigative and energetic.
And of course their long luxurious blue and tan coats, bright eyes and perky ears make them absolutely gorgeous too!
Take a look at these pictures and see if you think a Yorkie would suit you.
If you're thinking about getting a FURminator for your dog or cat, you've probably found thousands of reviews online from actual product users.
So what do pet owners think about the FURminator?
To find out, I sifted through hundreds of sites to look at FURminator reviews and sum them up for you here.
Is the "teacup yorkie" really just the runt of the litter who survived?
Or is this a valid new subgroup of the beloved Yorkshire Terrier?
Check out this info and then decide for yourself if the so-called teacup Yorkie, mini or micro Yorkie is really a type of Yorkie or just a small dog misnamed.... AND, if this is the right dog for you.

In this lens you'll find lots of great gift ideas for terrier owners and terrier lovers... especially Yorkie Terriers! Terriers come in an amazing range of sizes and shapes -- from the tiniest, the Yorkshire Terrier (about 5 lbs.) to the largest, the Airedale Terrier (about 80 lbs!)
What they all have in common is their origins: bred to hunt ground animals such as rats, badgers and mice. In fact the name Terrier comes from the French terre or earth.
Whatever their origins, we love our terriers in all their sizes and shapes... and love buying stuff for them. Hope you enjoy this lens!

Some of the basic Yorkshire terrier dog information about the loveable pup that's one of the more popular dogs around. Yorkies are small dogs with big personalities and it's that feisty spirit that makes them so cute! But they're also super cuddly... the best of both worlds! Hope you enjoy this lens, and after you can read more Yorkie Info here.
Starting around 5 or 6 months old, Yorkie puppies begin teething and that usually means their ears flop down, or don't start to stand up.
But don't panic - this is perfectly normal during teething.
Although there are several measures you can take to ensure your pup's ears DO in fact stand up -- including trimming the ear hair; massaging the base of the ears and taping them -- the best advice experts give is simply "be patient." Presuming your Yorkie comes from reasonably good stock, her ears WILL stand up when they're ready.
A very special lens for Morkie lovers everywhere - with gifts for others, for yourself or for your own special Morkie! All featuring Morkies and Morkie expressions.

And you thought it was a nothing-but-Dalmatians world when it comes to presents and cute stuff!
Our small dogs can be SOOOOO cute, we let them walk all over us.
But is that the best way to treat your dog?
Leading animal expert and dog trainer Cesar Millan says no! By ignoring the fact that our dogs are CANINES first and foremost, we're missing out on meeting many of their needs. Especially the need to be a follower in a pack. By letting our toy dog dominate and control the household, we encourage obnoxious behavior, anti-social attitudes and even dangerous practices - like the small dog challenging a big one.
It's really hard, but time to stop babying our small dogs and creating little monsters. Cesar Millan shows us how.
What's the difference?
Dog cross-breeds or hybrid dogs are all the rage - in fact they're often advertised as designer dogs. So what's the difference between today's designer dog and yesterday's mutt or mongrel?
Today's version is the combination - usually planned - of two purebred dogs. Popular crosses (such as cockapoos) are intentional and done by design -- in this example, the cocker spaniel and poodle mix is said to be hypoallergenic. Or at least, allergy-friendly. Another up and coming popular hybrid is the combo of Maltese and Yorkie, called a Morkie, also said to be hypoallergenic. You can see more morkie pups (or morky pups) here.
American, Canadian and other major kennel clubs will not register a cross dog, even if both parents are registered purebreds. However, some major kennel clubs will register these pups for performance events like agility and obedience.
The mutt or mongrel on the other hand, has unknown origins and so the mix of breeds is uncertain.
Who doesn't love MORKIES - that unique designer dog that's half Yorkshire Terrier and half Maltese!
Tiny, energetic, intelligent and 100% adorable, the Morkie (Morky) is becoming very popular. They're low-shedding, easy to care for and very affectionate dogs. If you'd like to learn more, check out Just Morkies.
If you have a Morkie, or you know someone who does, check out some of these gift ideas. They're from some of the leading online stores - where you can order what you like and it's shipped usually within 24 hours. Or try designing your own Morkie stuff - it's fun and it's not too hard!
Some dog breeds are notoriously difficult to house train or potty train. While the Yorkie isn't the easiest dog to train, it's not the hardest either. So take heart - with patience, consistency and a plan - you'll get there!
Awesome Morkie shirts!
Why a whole lens devoted to shirts for Morkies and Morkie-lovers?
Well it seems if you have a designer dog or a hybrid dog it's pretty tough to find special gear you and your family can enjoy featuring Morkies. So I've put together three online Morkie (Morky) stores - at Amazon, Zazzle and CafePress-- and added my own Morkie designs.
Hope you find something you'd like... and for other gift ideas, please click on one of the store names here to find lots of Morkie gifts and gear.
Sadly every dog breed has its own list of health concerns and conditions, and Yorkies are no exception. How to minimize these problems?
In this lens I discuss some of the most common Yorkie health problems - some are caused by genetics, some by how we feed and care for our Yorkies, and how we can minimize those common Yorkie health problems, so that our friends enjoy a long and healthy, happy life.
"Toto" is one of the best-loved small dogs in movies and books. But what breed was Dorothy's faithful sidekick?
In the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, the part of Toto is played by a Cairn Terrier called Terry. The dog's breed is never mentioned in the original book; however, based on the illustrations and some background history of the illustrator himself, it looks like Toto definitely started out as a Yorkie.

Mischievous little Yorkies love to dress up for Halloween.

T The Yorkshire Terrier is bred to be a small dog, usually under 10 lbs. and most often around 5 or 6 lbs. It's a small boned breed and not built to carry any extra weight.
It doesn't take much - if your Yorkie is 7.5 pounds and is meant to be about 5 pounds, she's 50% overweight! Imagine the impact on internal organs, joints and bones. And being overweight is proven to shorten your dog's life.
This lens will help you: identify if your Yorkie is overweighttell you about the negative impacts if he is too heavysuggest ways you can safely reduce your Yorkie's weight over time
If you're looking for a Morkie - the magical blend of Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese dog -- you need to be careful where you get one.
More casual breeders will offer Morkies - but just be VERY SURE their pups have been raised by them -- you don't want a puppy mill dog. That's 10 years or more of heartbreak!
Check your LOCAL newspaper or find a Morkie breeder online. Be sure to ask to visit their kennel, and see the other Morkies and dogs they have. Otherwise, you could be buying blind.
To be sure you're not buying from a puppy mill, research buying morkie puppies from reputable breeders and avoid buying online! This lens gives you some tips about Morkies for sale.

The theory of "hybrid vigor" among dogs is gaining popularity among fans of the new so-called "designer dogs" or hybrid breeds.
The theory goes that mixed breeds with their deeper gene pool - are less likely to have common genetic disorders found in virtually all purebreds. By combining two different breeds, these problems in effect, cancel one another out.
Unfortunately this theory simply isn't true, and for good reason. There's certainly no need to avoid mixed breed dogs -- but just be sure you're not buying into the idea of the combination as a new and heartier breed.
Above, an adorable Morkie (Morky) is the mix of Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier.
A number of of dog breeds, including the President's Portuguese Water Dog "Bo," are billed as non-shedding or hypo-allergenic.
But is the non-shedding dog fact or fiction?
Fiction!
All dogs and cats shed to some degree. Even people do! However there are some breeds that shed considerably less than others. And as far as being hypo-allergenic, or good for people with allergies, it's not always the hair that's the problem. We can be allergic to the dander from the animal's skin, saliva and even its urine!
So what breeds come closest to dogs that don't shed? Read on.
If you're getting smothered by pet hair, and spend most of your spare time swiffering, don't despair! You can cut down on shed hair all over your home, sometimes as much as 80%.
There are popular dog and cat deshedding tools like the FURminator or FurBuster, which 'brush' the loose hair out of your pet's coat safely and easily.
Plus there are 'traditional' deshedding tools like the rake and shedding blade.
Third, there is a nutritional supplement you might consider which can improve the quality of your pet's skin and fur and therefore reduce really excessive shedding.
This lens talks about some of your options to control that dog hair that's everywhere.
If you love Yorkies, or you've got a Yorkie lover on your gift list, why not make up your own special Yorkie Gift Basket, complete with your own personal touches?
You can vary items to suit your budget, and delight both your friend and your friend's little dog. Here's how!
Morkies are one of the new hybrid or designer dog breeds, the result of breeding a purebred Yorkshire Terrier with a purebred Maltese dog.
Both the parent dogs are small, cute and have long, silky hair. The Yorkie is a terrier, so is more aggressive than the Maltese, and the Yorkie has stand-up, pointed ears. The Maltese, in comparison has floppy, 'spaniel' type ears.
And of course, the big difference: the Yorkshire Terrier is black and brown while the Maltese is pure white.
So the Morkie puppies can be any combination of colours, including a blended beige or light brown. And the Morkie puppy's ears can be up or down. But one thing you can count on: this little dog is a great companion for you and your family and will bring years of joy.
In this lens, I'll share as many pictures as I can find of Morkies, to show you just how different they can look from one another.
SURVEY SAYS.... "pumpkin" is the number one favourite costume for small dogs, according to USA Today. Next most popular for your dog? Why, devil of couse, followed closely by the ever-popular hotdog!

When I first heard of this recipe, I laughed... but I'm also a diehard diet Coke fan... so I thought, what the heck, I'll try it!
Guess what - delicious beyond words! And when you see how easy it is you won't believe it.
Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.... mmmmmm!
Morkies, or Yorktese dogs, are the result of breeding a purebred Yorkshire Terrier with a Maltese dog.
Smart, feisty and affectionate, these little dogs are great companions..... and since they come from two breeds that don't shed, you can be assured that your Morkie puppy will not shed either.
Morkies have lots of other great attributes, and besides, they're adorable dogs too!
This lens is all about which dogs shed, and why Morkies don't shed.... enjoy!
Is your dog driving you crazy with bad behavior? How do you figure out if it's a lack of training, a very stubborn animal or separation anxiety?
If you own a dog with separation anxiety, life can be really frustrating. You leave your house feeling bad that your dog is alone. At work you are worried about what your dog might be getting into while you are gone. You hate that your dog has to suffer and for that, you are suffering everyday along with your dog.
This lens talks about some of the ways you can manage dog separation anxiety.
For many years before our son was born, I raised Maltese dogs. Three, four, five... you can never be too thin or too rich or have too many Maltese right?!?
Well around the time our son Sean turned 7, he began asking for a "boy's dog," a real dog... a dog he could play a little rough with. (Was it those lugs in grade one mocking our tiny white Maltese dogs?)
Anyway my husband and I agreed; after all, Sean was an only child. And we began looking for an ideal dog.
If you have a dog and take him in the car, it's vital you secure him properly.
Otherwise, it's not a pretty picture.
If a window breaks or a door flies open in a car accident, your terrified dog will escape and run into traffic, only to be run over or be the cause another accident.
Even in a minor collision, an unrestrained dog can be thrown into the dashboard or the windshield. Like any other projectile, the dog will fly forward with tremendous speed and force and go through the windshield and/or seriously injure you and your passengers. (In an auto accident a 60 pound dog in a car traveling 30 mph will hit an object ten inches in front of him at 1,200 pounds per square inch.)
And a small dog held on your lap in the front seat will almost certainly be killed by the air bag deployment. Sorry to be graphic but it's something to think about.
Well, how long's a piece of string?
Yorkies can cost anywhere from $300 for a rescue yorkie to $1,200 to $3,000 and more.
What makes the price so wide-ranging?
It depends on where you get your dog; its age; pedigree; quality and a number of other factors... so read on!
Choosing a Dog for Dummies
My family and I have always loved Golden Retrievers, except for that one thing:
Shedding! Hair all over your clothes, hair all over the house, hair in your salad... well, you get the picture.
So when I heard about a grooming brush called a FURminator, I wondered if it could be as good as they said. Removed up to 90% of shed hair? Really? 'Brush' it out with the FURminator instead of sweeping it up?
This lens describes one of my favourite dog grooming tools - the FURminator. It really does remove loose hair in enormous amounts, and keeps your dog's coat looking smooth, shiny and healthy.
BUYER BEWARE! It's always been good advice, and if you are looking for a 'hybrid' or designer dog like a Morkie puppy, it's REALLY good advice.
It's very sad, but true... even when it comes to buying a puppy, there are scammers out there waiting to take your money and deliver heartbreak, not a happy, healthy Morkie puppy.
Here are four of the most popular swindles and some ways you can avoid being ripped off when you are looking to buy a Morkie puppy.
Want better health? Then get a dog!
It's no surprise that dog and cat owners have better health than people without pets: studies have shown that people with pets tend to have decreased stress levels, and many have lower blood pressure. They're in better physical shape than non-pet owners.
Pets also help relieve depression. Plus, your chances of surviving a heart attack or stroke are much better if you're a pet owner, according to scientists.
No doubt daily dog walks are a big factor in better health ... but there's more to it than that. Here are some more things to do with your dog that can improve your health.

Don't wait for January 1st to start a better year!
Looking for things to do with your dog?
Why not make this the year you have more fun.
The tradition of New Year's resolutions goes back to ancient Rome, when Julius Caesar arbitrarily proclaimed January 1st the beginning of the new year. Romans dedicated this day to the god Janus, (hence the name "January") and since Janus has two faces - one looking forward and one looking back, the day symbolized learning from the past and making resolutions for the future for early Romans. This symbolic meaning has survived centuries.
No matter how it got its start, the new year is a great time to resolve to make our lives healthier, more productive and happier - for you and your dog!
Sometimes it can be a lot of fun taking the dog on a family vacation or road trip. And it's even more fun if you plan ahead.
Here are some tips and resources to make car travel with your dog safe, fun and easier.
