Yorkshire Terrier Breed Standards
Almost every major country in the world has a national "kennel club" or not-for-profit organization that oversees purebred dogs - their health, standards, competitions and well-being.
The purebred Yorkie or Yorkshire terrier typically weighs between 4 and 6 pounds, and not over 7 pounds (3 kgs) according to the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs. Yorkies stand about 5 - 6" high at the shoulder (15 to 17 cm) and have black and tan coats, or black and silver coats.
Although strict kennel club guidelines say that Yorkies MUST BE "tan with a blue saddle, or gold with a blue saddle...." there are other colour combinations too. According to these "rules" black and tan Yorkies, solid tan/gold Yorkies, and liver/chocolate Yorkies are considered very faulty, but if you're not spending most of your time in a show ring, who cares! (The blue btw is supposed to be dark steel blue, but is often more silvery blue.)
Yorkies are born nearly all black, and the tan and steel-silver colours develop as they grow into adults.
