5 Tips for naming your dog
1. One or 2 syllable names are ideal. Your Yorkie may not respond if you're yelling "Toby Tiny Dancer III!" from the other end of the dog park.
2. Dogs hear the vowel sounds in their name better than the consonants - so Bo-Bo and No-No sound pretty much the same to a dog. Sounds with a vowel at the end, like Sammy, Charlie, Lucky .... are perfect - consider any name that ends with the “eee” sound.
3. Pick a name your pet can grow into. "Baby Love" won't be a baby forever.
4. Do you really want to be calling "Doodie Eater" or “Angel Princess Baby” when you’re at the vet’s or the dog park?
5. Once you’ve named your Yorkie Terrier, try to avoid nicknames - I know we all do it! My dog’s Tinker Bell but I always call her Tink-Bink (?!) .... Nicknames add another layer of confusion for your Yorkie.
What your dog’s name means to you
Your dog's name says as much about you as it does your pet.
-
a human name might mean your dog is virtually a child to you
-
while a name like "Hunter," "Tracker" or "Champ" shows you're interested in your dog's function in life
-
an offbeat name shows off your cleverness to your friends
-
while a popular, well-worn dog name might indicate a desire to stick wtih the comfortable, classic, tried and true.
anthropomorphizing
the attribution of human characteristics or behavior
to a god, animal, or object.
What your dog’s name means to him or her
Essentially, a dog’s name should be a cue for eye contact - whenever you say your dog's name you want him to look directly at you. So don't use his name when scolding or reprimanding. Do use his name when you want to get his attention. More than anything, dogs recognize the TONE of your voice, over what you're saying.
Dogs don't hear consonants that well - but they hear vowels.
So any name that ends in vowel sounds like "eee" or "aaa" work really well:
